All the flattery without flash

December 04, 1997|By Elsa Klensch | Elsa Klensch,Los Angeles Times Syndicate

My current boyfriend made me throw out practically all my evening clothes. He said they were too "flashy" or "gaudy."

I agree, but since I have a dark olive skin and black hair, I feel I need as much help as I can get at night. Please suggest something understated but still glamorous.

Sophisticated colors in luxurious fabrics are always a good choice for evening. They look rich and are flattering to most skin tones. For the holidays, look for separates in fabrics that have a sheen or are iridescent; shine always gives a lift. Consider velvets, taffetas, brocades or any of the new synthetics or blends that are soft and move with the body. As for color, go for dull metallics -- bronze, copper, matte gold -- that will flatter your olive skin.
