Despite rumors, Weatherbie says he's anchored at Navy

It is that time of the year again in Annapolis. Yes, it is Army-Navy week leading up to Saturday's season-ending game. But it is also a time frame in which annual reports surface that Navy coach Charlie Weatherbie might be heading elsewhere.

Last year, Weatherbie's name was linked to job openings at Boston College, Pittsburgh and Baylor. The latest rumor had the University of Arkansas seeking a replacement for Danny Ford. Weatherbie, who coached the Razorbacks' quarterbacks in 1990 and 1991, was reportedly on the list of candidates.

"I haven't been contacted by anyone from Arkansas," Weatherbie said yesterday. "And, if I was, I would have no interest. I love working here, but it's still nice to be mentioned."

Navy athletic director Jack Lengyel, who signed Weatherbie to a 10-year contract running through 2006 after the coach had exploratory talks with Baylor last December, said he was opposed to allowing anyone to interview his coach.

"We made a very serious commitment with the contract we gave Weatherbie, and I think both the coach and any other institution would respect that," said Lengyel.
