Accomplice to Crofton murder gets 20 years

December 02, 1997

Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Eugene M. Lerner sentenced an accomplice to a Crofton murder to 20 years in prison yesterday.

The sentence of Rueben L. Williams, 23, formerly of Landover, will run concurrently with a 12 1/2 -year federal sentence he is serving on armed robbery and other charges, following the prosecution's recommendation.

Williams pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection with the shooting death of Catherine Elizabeth Webster, 16, of Bowie outside Crofton Billiards in March 1995. Prosecutors dropped murder and other charges in exchange for Williams' testimony against William "Danny" Stewart, 25, of Landover.

Stewart was convicted last week of first-degree murder and eight other charges. Williams testified that Stewart used his .357-caliber Magnum to shoot at a car leaving the pool hall parking lot in a botched robbery attempt.

Stewart could be sentenced next month to life in prison without parole.
