Greater Baltimore Medical Center yesterday opened the Boutique at GBMC, combining general salon services with specialty products for cancer patients.

In addition to offering "anything you would find in a full-service salon" for the general public, said manager Esther Karavedas, the boutique sells breast prosthetics, "many styles of wigs," and skin care products "designed for people going through treatments" such as chemotherapy.

Located in GBMC's Cancer Center, the boutique is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Although customers can drop in, they can also make appointments, especially for haircuts and wig styling, Karavedas said.

The facility is staffed by two full-time cosmeticians and about 15 volunteers, many of whom have gone through cancer treatments themselves, said Karavedas.

She said she came to GBMC about eight months ago with a background as a makeup artist, and at first concentrated on cancer patients. However, she said, GMBC decided it was "much nicer" to serve cancer patients in a facility that was "comfortable for them but open to everybody."
