Spirit loses 6th in row on road, wilts to Heat

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- For the second consecutive game, the Spirit failed to hold a first-half lead, as the Harrisburg Heat rallied for a 14-11 win last night before 6,037 at State Farm Show Arena.

The Spirit (2-8) fell to 3 1/2 games behind Harrisburg for second place in the East Division, and it dropped to 0-6 in road games this season.

Led by two two-point goals from Barry Stitz, the Spirit went ahead 7-3 with 9: 45 left in the second quarter, but the Heat tied the game at halftime on two-point goals by Shawn Blakeman and Bill Becher.

Harrisburg (4-3) then broke from an 11-11 tie and took control of the game with two goals off penalty shots midway through the the fourth quarter.

The Spirit played two men down as both Matt Tirschman and Jim McCombs were whistled for tripping violations, and Jim Hesch and David Bascome converted for a 13-11 Heat lead.

Harrisburg outshot the Spirit 33-2, including 9-2 in the fourth quarter.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday night but heavy fog postponed the Spirit's flight from Chicago.
