Starting this week, callers to the Maryland AIDS information line will be temporarily referred to the National AIDS Hotline as state officials seek a new vendor to operate the service.
By the end of the week, calls will be automatically routed to the national number. Until then, callers will hear recorded instructions directing them to call the National AIDS Hotline at 1-800-342-AIDS, Ext. 2437.
The national line is operated by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC operators will have access to a resource guide to acquired immune deficiency syndrome and human immunodeficiency virus services available in Maryland.
The state's contract with Salud Inc. of Washington, the former operator of the Maryland AIDS hot line, was scheduled to expire June 30. According to state officials, the company decided to end the contract prematurely.
