Nfl Week 14

November 30, 1997

San Francisco (11-1) at Kansas City (9-3)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: 49ers by 3 1/2 .

Vs. spread: 49ers 8-4; Chiefs 7-3.

Last week: 49ers beat Chargers, 17-10. Chiefs beat Seahawks, 19-14.

Worth watching: 49ers DT Dana Stubblefield is having a huge season, compiling a league-leading 15 sacks. The Chiefs need a big play or two from QB Rich Gannon, but he has thrown for only one TD in 101 attempts.

Outlook: The Chiefs have the ability to surprise, as they showed in their upset of Denver two weeks ago. But today they face the NFL's toughest run defense, and San Francisco has allowed only 10.2 points a game the past five weeks.

Notable: 49ers lead the NFL with a turnover differential of plus-21.

Injuries:

49ERS: Out: WR Jerry Rice (knee). Doubtful: CB Marquez Pope (foot). Questionable: DE Roy Barker (calf). Probable: RB Chuck Levy (shoulder); S Brett Maxie (finger); S Tim McDonald (toe); CB Frankie Smith (knee); DT Bryant Young (ankle).

CHIEFS: Out: QB Elvis Grbac (shoulder). Questionable: RB Kimble Anders (ankle); CB Darren Anderson (groin); DE John Browning (calf). Probable: WR Lake Dawson (knee); TE Ted Popson (head); WR Tamarick Vanover (foot); T Steve Wallace (knee); DE Dan Williams (ankle).

Tampa Bay (8-4) at N.Y. Giants (7-4-1)

Time: 4 p.m., Ch. 45.

Line: Giants by 1 1/2 .

Vs. spread: Bucs 7-5; Giants 6-5.

Last week: Bucs lost to Bears, 13-7. Giants tied Redskins, 7-7.

Worth watching: The Bucs are getting a breakthrough season from QB Trent Dilfer, who has 19 TD passes and only six interceptions. Giants FB Charles Way is averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

Outlook: A gut-check game for both teams. After being upset by the Bears, the Bucs are 0-17 in games played when the temperature drops below 42 degrees. More important, they're facing a team that makes few mistakes and is looking to keep its lead in the NFC East.

Notable: Bucs RB Warrick Dunn has been limited to 181 yards in 64 carries in the past six games.

Injuries:

BUCS: Questionable: WR Horace Copeland (ankle); TE Patrick Hape (ankle); TE Jackie Harris (groin). Probable: RB Jerry Ellison (shoulder); C Tony Mayberry (knee); T Jerry Wunsch (elbow).

GIANTS: Out: C Derek Engler (ankle); DE Cedric Jones (leg); C Brian Williams (eye). Doubtful: RB Rodney Hampton (knee); S Brandon Sanders (groin). Questionable: RB Tiki Barber (hamstring). Probable: LB Corey Miller (ankle); RB Tyrone Wheatley (flu); S Tito Wooten (ankle).

Atlanta (4-8) at Seattle (6-6)

Time: 4 p.m.

Line: Seahawks by 7.

Vs. spread: Falcons 5-4; Seahawks 6-6.

Last week: Falcons beat Saints, 20-3. Seahawks lost to Chiefs, 19-14.

Worth watching: Seahawks QB Warren Moon leads the AFC in passing with a 79.9 rating. The Falcons' Chris Chandler is quietly having a fine year, ranking second in the NFC with a 93.7 rating.

Outlook: Atlanta's best chance is to get to Moon via the pass rush. The Falcons have 46 sacks, two better than the 49ers, so they are capable. But you can expect the Seahawks to slow the rush enough to make a couple of big plays that make the difference.

Notable: Moon has thrown for 739 yards and five TDs in his past two games against the Falcons.

Injuries:

FALCONS: Questionable: DE Lester Archambeau (knee); RB Bob Christian (hamstring); DT Dan Owens (knee); TE Ed West (knee). Probable: CB Michael Booker (hip); C Calvin Collins (abdomen); RB Harold Green (knee); LB Jessie Tuggle (ankle).

SEAHAWKS: Out: DT Cortez Kennedy (leg); CB Shawn Springs (thumb). Doubtful: T Howard Ballard (arm); RB Reggie Brown (knee); G Derrick Graham (neck); P Rick Tuten (pelvis). Questionable: S Bennie Blades (back); CB Jeremy Lincoln (ankle).

Indianapolis (1-11) at New England (7-5)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: Patriots by 11.

Vs. spread: Colts 4-7; Patriots 5-7.

Last week: Colts lost to Lions, 32-10. Patriots beat Dolphins, 27-24.

Worth watching: Patriots RB Curtis Martin has averaged 110 rushing yards in his past four games against Indianapolis. Colts RB Marshall Faulk needs to bounce back after being held to 38 yards against Detroit.

Outlook: The Patriots, a game back in the AFC East, need to win and dominate if they plan to start a run at a second straight Super Bowl appearance. The rest of their schedule is daunting -- at Jacksonville, vs. Pittsburgh, at Miami. The Patriots are not only the better team in this game, they're the more desperate team.

Notable: Patriots are 18-0 since last season when scoring first.

Injuries:

COLTS: Doubtful: TE Scott Slutzker (foot). Questionable: LB Elijah Alexander (ankle); S Robert Blackmon (thigh); DE Al Fontenot (ankle-calf); QB Paul Justin (knee). Probable: WR Aaron Bailey (knee); CB Carlton Gray (ankle); T Adam Meadows (hand).

PATRIOTS: Doubtful: WR Terry Glenn (hamstring). Questionable: WR Dietrich Jells (knee); CB Steve Lofton (hamstring). Probable: CB Steve Israel (knee).

N.Y. Jets (8-4) at Buffalo (5-7)

Time: 1 p.m.

Line: Jets by 2.

Vs. spread: Jets 7-5; Bills 5-7.

Last week: Jets beat Vikings, 23-21. Bills lost to Oilers, 31-14.
