A well-dressed man robbed a Provident Bank branch on U.S. 40 in Ellicott City on Friday afternoon, taking an undisclosed amount of money, Howard County police reported.

The robber -- described as a black male, 6 feet tall, 210 pounds and in his mid-30s, wearing a tan, pinstriped suit and silver, square-framed glasses -- entered the bank in the 9300 block of Baltimore National Pike about 4 p.m. and presented a note to the teller.

No weapon was displayed in the holdup, police said.
