Festival of Lights

Just in time for the holidays, here's a menorah that's charming in both senses of the word.

Handmade by Rina Peleg, the off-white, functional ceramic sculpture has little "charms," including Judaic memorabilia, hanging from it. Priced at $315, it's one of 12 menorahs in the native Israeli artist's Ora Illumination Collection, new for 1997.

The menorahs are available at Craft Caviar, 1433 Reisterstown Road, 410-653-7333.

Don't blink

Your favorite glasses wearers will never lose their specs again if they can park them on one of these whimsical cat or dog glasses rests.

Hand carved and painted in Indonesia, the rests can be found at Hometown Girl, 1000 W. 36th St. in Hampden, 410-467-1015. Look for other pet-oriented gifts in the same line, including feeding bowls and birdhouses.

Dazzle on a budget

Entertaining and decorating for the holidays doesn't have to be costly. The discount retailer Target has some striking -- and inexpensive -- answers to holiday dilemmas such as what to give for hostess gifts and how to accessorize a table for a party. Look for items like candles in mirrored holders (99 cents-$12.99), contemporary tableware in silver and cobalt blue (dinner plate $8.99, glasses $3.99), Estensi scalloped dinnerware (pictured, $8.99-$9.99) and vases in sky blue, violet and lime (pictured, $16.99).

Benefit tour

One house has collections of snow globes, dolls and teddy bears. Another has handmade and antique Christmas decorations. Each of the 10 properties on the Bel Air Holiday House Tour on Sunday, Dec. 14, offers something special for the holidays. Sponsored by the AMC Harford County Chapter, a volunteer group of the National Cancer Prevention Fund, the tour will include holiday music, a boutique, a quilt raffle and hot cider and cookies.

The tour will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15. For more information, call 410-838-8347.
