Elton John shops outrageous wardrobe as AIDS fund-rasier

Self-confessed "shopaholic" Elton John put on sale 10,000 outrageous outfits from his flamboyant wardrobe yesterday to raise money for his AIDS Foundation.

"If I have one addiction left in my life these days it is shopping," confessed the rock star famed for his platform heels and bejeweled glasses. Clutching a bright orange Versace suit being put on sale for a tenth of its original price, he cut the pink ribbon at his London "Out of the Closet" shop to open the sale.

The 50-year-old singer said he spent $4 million to buy the clothing. He hopes the sale will raise one-tenth of that amount for his foundation.

Knoxville, Tenn., statue honors author Alex Haley

Alex Haley is being honored with a bronze statue in the city where he once lived.

Haley, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Roots" who died in 1992, was born in west Tennessee and later lived in Knoxville. The statue, 12 feet high and 4,200 pounds, was installed in Morningside Park this week.

"It is about honoring an average-looking man of color who is famous because of his writing, not because he is an athlete with a good physique," said Evon Easley Milton, a community activist who came up with the statue idea. The official dedication ceremony is scheduled for February.

Lenin's Swiss bank deposit not enough for a party today

Swiss banks' check of Holocaust-era accounts has turned up capital belonging to communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin: a total of $8.90 apparently once intended to pay his party dues.

A list of inactive accounts released in October included one belonging to a "Ulyanov, Vladimir, Zurich." The Zuercher Kantonal Bank confirmed yesterday that was indeed the founder of the Soviet state. Lenin, born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov in 1870, frequently lived in Switzerland from 1907 until March 1917, when he returned to Russia following the overthrow of Czar Nicholas II.
