Astros: Agreed to two-year, $1,375,000 contract with free-agent P Doug Henry, who had been with Giants.
Athletics: Traded P Don Wengert and IF David Newhan to Padres for P Doug Bochtler and IF Jorge Velandia.
Diamondbacks: Named Joe Almaraz manager and Jeff Davenport and Dave Jorn coaches at Rookie-level Lethbridge and Mike Brumley manager and George Lopez and Royal Clayton coaches at Rookie-level Arizona.
Giants: Retained OF Stan Javier by agreeing to two-year, $3.5 million contract. Named Jim Davenport manager of Triple-A Fresno with Joel Horlen pitching coach and Joe Lefebvre hitting coach.
Mariners: Claimed P Cameron Smith off waivers from Padres.
Orioles: Triple-A Rochester promoted Steve Salluzzo to director of marketing, Joe Ferrigno to director of ticket operations and Jennifer Waldow to director of administration.
Padres: Nullified minor-league contract with P Jose Parra, which club said was negotiated by someone who misrepresented himself as Parra's agent. Parra had previously agreed to pitch in Korea in 1998.
Phillies: Short-season Single-A Batavia changed nickname from Clippers to Muckdogs.
White Sox: Placed P Jeff Darwin on waivers for purpose of giving him unconditional release.
Winnipeg: Independent team re-signed manager Hal Lanier through 1999.

Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation: Gave Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which goes to nation's top senior quarterback, to Tennessee's Peyton Manning.
