Dowling powers unbeaten Navy to 70-43 romp

Becky Dowling scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Navy to a 70-43 win over visiting Sacramento State College in women's basketball yesterday. Dowling also had four steals, which gives her 197 in her career -- one shy of the school record.

Sophomore Erica Hayes chipped in 10 points for the Midshipmen (4-0).

UMBC 52, Bucknell 35: The Retrievers held the visiting Bison to just nine first-half points, setting a school record.

Franklin and Marshall 64, Salisbury State 51: Brandy Burkett's 18 points led the host Diplomats (1-1) over the Sea Gulls (0-2) in the consolation of the Tip-Off Tournament.

Bowie State 63, Bryant 55: Senior Tarsha Wilson scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead 13th-ranked Bowie State (3-0) over Bryant College (1-2) in the championship game of the Bryant Classic in Smithfield, R.I.


Goucher 70, Ferrum 69, OT: Tavar Witherspoon (Calvert Hall) and Bakari Ward each scored 19 to lift the Gophers (1-1) over the Panthers (0-2) in the consolation of the Roanoke (Va.) Tournament.

Delaware State 91, Washington College 82: Terrence Hood scored 26 as the Hornets dropped the Shoremen in the season opener for both teams.
