Navy women roll, 84-68 UMBC, Mount fall short

Joanne Groth scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as Navy hammered visiting Western Carolina, 84-68, last night at Alumni Hall.

Erica Hayes added 13 points for Navy (3-0).

Army 46, UMBC 41: Army (1-1) used an 8-0 run in the final five minutes to rally for a victory at UMBC Fieldhouse. Retrievers senior Kendra Damann scored 15.

Duquesne 72, Mount St. Mary's 63: The Mountaineers rallied from a 27-point, first-half deficit but were unable to overcome the Lady Dukes in Pittsburgh.

Frostburg 57, Gettysburg 42: Kara Reed scored 18 to lead the Bobcats in the season opener for both teams in the McDonald's/FSU Basketball Classic.

Western Maryland 77, William Paterson 75, OT: Kathi Snyder scored seven of her 13 points in overtime to lead the Green Terror to a first-round win in the Lady Spartan Classic in York, Pa. Western Maryland will play York in today's championship game at 3: 30 p.m.

Men

Western Maryland 87, Felician 79: Will Marshall scored 21 to lead the Green Terror (1-0) in the opening round of the Western Maryland College Converse Tipoff. Western Maryland will play Virginia Wesleyan in the title game tonight.

Johns Hopkins 80, Emory & Henry 64: Greg Roehrig's 13 points and brother Dave Roehrig's 11 led the Blue Jays in the first round of the Blue Jay Classic.

Franklin & Marshall 112, Villa Julie 56: Sophomore Mike Ritacco scored a career-high 23, as the Diplomats rolled over the Mustangs in the first round of the S.W. Sponagle Classic in Lancaster, Pa.

Baldwin-Wallace 105, Salisbury State 98: Brady Griffith scored 22 to lift the Yellow Jackets over the host Sea Gulls in the Susquehanna University Tournament.
