Coppin State wins opener, 88-57 State women

Liesha Mitchell scored 19 points and had seven rebounds to lead the Coppin State Eagles to an easy 88-57 women's college basketball victory over Western Carolina at the Coppin Center. It was their first game under new coach Britt King, and it was Coppin's first win in an opener since 1992-93.

Coppin State went on a 23-2 run in the first 10 minutes of the game. Western Carolina, which was held to 35 percent shooting and was out-rebounded 51-34, never got closer than 17 thereafter. Simone Adams had career highs of 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Eagles.

* Navy 65, Iona 50: Forward Becky Dowling scored a game-high 23 and had 10 rebounds as the Midshipmen won their opener. Laurie Coffey scored 13.

* Bowie State 87, UDC 43: Rashida Brooks scored a game-high 22 and Teresa Wilson added 16 points and 11 rebounds as the host Bulldogs won their opener.
