O's expected to name Murray coach today

November 20, 1997|By Joe Strauss

The Orioles are expected today to announce the hiring of former Orioles first baseman Eddie Murray as a member of manager Ray Miller's coaching staff.

The hiring signals the end of Murray's likely Hall of Fame career -- he has 3,255 hits and 504 home runs -- and with the expected promotion of longtime Dominican scout Carlos Bernhardt completes Miller's staff.

Murray, an Oriole from 1977 to 1988 and in 1996, played last season with the Anaheim Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers, batting .222 with three homers in 167 at-bats.
