Brewers: Retained free-agent P Doug Jones (6-6, 2.02 ERA, 36 saves), who agreed to $3 million, one-year contract.

Devil Rays: Named Frank Howard bench coach, Greg Riddoch third base coach, Billy Hatcher first base coach, Rick Williams pitching coach and Steve Henderson hitting coach.

Mariners: Retained free-agent All-Star 2B Joey Cora, who agreed to $1.65 million, one-year contract.

Red Sox: Retained free-agent P Bret Saberhagen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who agreed to $1.6 million, one-year contract.

Rockies: Retained free-agent C Jeff Reed (.297, 17 HRs in 256 at-bats), who agreed to $2.6 million, two-year contract. Signed free-agent IF Jeff Huson, who had been with Brewers, to minor-league contract.

Tigers: Agreed to terms with 1B Tony Clark (32 HRs, 117 RBIs) on four-year contract reportedly worth $12 million.

Bridgeport (Independent): Named Willie Upshaw manager.

Bent (Independent): Named Wally Backman manager.
