Pirates: Named Marty Brown manager and Jeff Treadway hitting coach for Single-A Augusta.

Red Sox: Re-signed P Bret Saberhagen.


Atlantic Central Football Conference: Announced formation of conference with members Salisbury State, Frostburg State, Chowan, Ferrum, Methodist and Wesley.

Capital Athletic Conference: Salisbury State junior F Mike Guiffrida was named all-conference first team. Teammates Darren LaRocque, Lou Petrovia, Andrew Rogers and Kyle Eberhardt each made second team.

Centennial Conference: Johns Hopkins sophomore DB Harrison Bernstein was named Defensive Player of the Year. Other Hopkins players named to first team were LB Carl Cangelosi, OT Dave Perna and PK Todd Bencivenni.

St. Francis, Pa.: Fired Pete Mayock, football coach, and Keith Luensmann, assistant football coach.

Western Maryland: Announced junior DB Tom Lapato (Mount Airy, South Carroll High) was selected to GTE Academic All-America College Division District II football team.


Cardinals: Waived RB Kevin Bouie.

Bengals: Released QB Erik Wilhelm. Signed QB Eric Kresser and WR Mike Jenkins from practice squad. Placed RB Scottie Graham on IR.


NHL: Named St. Louis Blues RW Brett Hull player of the week.

Chesapeake Icebreakers (ECHL): Named Scott Bershadsky director of media-public relations.
