Man extradited from Fla. convicted of beating ex-girlfriend

November 18, 1997

A former Carroll County man with no fixed address was found guilty yesterday of assaulting his ex-girlfriend outside a Westminster bar in 1995.

Jerry W. Clegg, 41, was extradited in February from Orlando, Fla., where he fled after the Aug. 17, 1995, beating of Tammy L. Stewart of Culpepper, Va.

Clegg pleaded not guilty to one count of assault with intent to maim but agreed not to contest the prosecutor's statement of the facts in the case. In return, charges of assault and battery were dropped.

Witnesses told police that Stewart walked into a bar on West Main Street about 8 p.m. and was forced outside by Clegg, who pulled her hair, punched her in the face until she fell and kicked her in the head, damaging her jaw and teeth, prosecutors said.

Officers found Stewart on the street with severe head and ear injuries.

Circuit Judge Raymond E. Beck Sr. set Clegg's sentencing for Dec. 3.
