Girl, 12, raped police arrest suspect

November 18, 1997|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 12-year-old girl was raped in a Charles Village apartment building yesterday morning, and the suspicions of a passer-by led to the arrest of a suspect, police said.

The girl was in the 2100 block of Maryland Ave. about 7: 30 a.m. when a man lured her into the building, said Robert W. Weinhold Jr., a police spokesman. A passer-by suspicious of the interaction between the man and girl called police, who arrested the man as he was about to leave, Weinhold said.

He said the girl was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Charles Christopher Smith, 20, of no fixed address was charged with first-degree rape, Weinhold said.
