Layup at buzzer lifts UMBC, 60-58

UMBC junior guard Kathy Doyle converted a layup at the buzzer to give the host Retrievers a 60-58 women's basketball victory over Canisius yesterday in the season opener for both teams.

UMBC sophomore Kim Brown rebounded a missed jumper by Melissa DeClemente with five seconds left, then fired a baseball pass to Doyle down the right sideline.

UMBC, which shot 38 percent from the field, was paced by Damann and Simmons with 15 points each.
