Middle school contests highlight geography week

WHERE IN the world are the Aeolian Islands? In what state is the Noatak River? Where is the city of Cusco, sometimes spelled Cuzco? (See answers below).

This is Geography Awareness Week. Students in Lindale/Brooklyn Park Middle Schools might hear questions such as these during morning announcements. The student with the first correct answer drawn will be awarded a prize.

In preparation for the week, students participated in the Maryland Geography Alliance Poster Contest. Students had to design a poster that looked as if they were looking through the window of a train or a plane at a place they would like to see.

Scenes of Paris and Disney World were among some of the popular destinations. But some unusual locations, such as outer space and the ocean floor, also were depicted, said Phil Solloway, social studies department chairman.

"We really didn't think of space and underwater places when we did the project," he said.

These students entered the statewide geography contest: Kristi Martini, Patricia Helmick, Shelly Austin, Christi Brown, Patricia Howard, Derrick Hammel, Cassandra Kile, John Dudley, Becky Bledsoe, Ray McNeil, Jennifer Perry, Jerry Salisbury, Heather Anderson, Heather Briggs, Matt Davidson, Danielle Stewart, Aimee Scardina, Chris Chaney, Elizabeth Dutcher, Melena Miller, Robert Perkins, Jimmy Gibson, Kim Williams, Stephanie Norris, Jen Simmons, Chris Hopkins, Jenna Milito, Jessica Folmer, Robin Gordon, Jamie Martinez, Kim Freshour, Sabrina Battle, David Bafford, Candice Abrahamsen, Racheal Nicole Wilson, Sherita Lachelle German, Ashley Dunningan, Dana Miller, Robert Cataldi, Jamie Henderson, Deana Marie Korb.
