Suspect in theft critically hurt after shooting by county officer

A car theft suspect who police said attempted a carjacking on a North Arundel Hospital parking lot was reported in critical condition yesterday after being shot by an Anne Arundel County police officer Friday.

Authorities said the officer -- Bryan Malar, 28, who has been on the force five years and is assigned to the Eastern District -- was assigned to administrative duty pending completion of an investigation of the shooting.

Shawn Alfred Chowanetz, 30, was arrested this month after police pursued a stolen car from Severna Park to Pasadena. He (( was suspected of taking the vehicle and robbing its elderly owner Nov. 1 at the Elkridge Corners Shopping Center in Howard County, according to police.

Chowanetz of the 1200 block of Purnell Road in Severna Park was reported to be in critical but stable condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

According to police, Malar stopped a black 1991 Camaro -- a car that had been reported stolen in Baltimore -- on Oakwood Road (( near Hospital Drive shortly after 3 p.m. and chased the driver when he fled.

Malar spotted the driver in the parking lot of North Arundel Hospital, allegedly trying to steal a car from an elderly man, and ordered him to lie on the ground.

Police said the driver of the Camaro was shot in the side when he reached toward his pocket. Police said the investigation could take a week.

A Linthicum Heights man was hospitalized Thursday after his minivan crossed the center line on Telegraph Road and crashed head-on into a pole, county police said.

Harry Adam Zoller, 76, of the 300 block of Darlene Ave. was in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police said Zoller was southbound on Telegraph in his 1987 Dodge Caravan shortly after 1 p.m. when the van drifted across the road near Bucklina Avenue and into a utility pole on the shoulder of the northbound lane.

The vehicle spun counterclockwise around the pole and came to rest on the north shoulder, police said.

A gunman wearing a ski mask robbed a Mountain Road gas station early Friday and struck a clerk on the head with his weapon, county police said.

John Wayne Bowen, 24, told police a gunman walked into Pasadena Mobil in the 4100 block of Mountain Road just after 12: 30 a.m., pulled out a gun, demanded money and the surveillance videotape.

After Bowen gave the man cash and the video, the robber hit him on the head with the weapon and fled, police said.

Bowen refused medical treatment. Police do not have a detailed description of the gunman.

Linthicum: A burglar pried open a side door to a house in the 100 block of Camp Meade Road between 10: 30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday and stole a computer, printer and jewelry worth $12,000.
