Hayes guides Navy women to opening win

Sophomore Erica Hayes scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Navy women's basketball team to a 77-55 win over Delaware in its season opener last night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

Hayes scored 17 first-half points on 6-for-8 shooting as Navy took a 39-26 lead at halftime. She connected on all four of her shots in the second half.

Senior Joanne Groth and Laurie Coffey each added 14 points for Navy. Groth also had seven rebounds and six steals.

The Mids return four starters from last season's 22-6 team.
