Classics by candlelight

Classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco and the Colorado String Quartet bring their elegantly refined playing styles to a Candlelight Concert at Howard Community College's Smith Theatre on Saturday. Barrueco, a faculty member of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, has a comprehensive repertoire that runs from Mozart to McCartney, and has worked with such renowned artists as Placido Domingo and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The Colorado String Quartet has been lauded on four continents since winning first prize at the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition in 1983. The program for Saturday evening's concert includes major quartets by Haydn and Schulhoff, as well as works for guitar by Barrios and Falla.

The Candlelight Concert Society presents Manuel Barrueco and the Colorado String Quartet in concert on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Howard Community College's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. Tickets are $25 general admission, for seniors and $9 for students with I.D. Call 410-715-0034.
