Marriott International Inc. announced yesterday that it intends to spend $447,000 to purchase the rights to the Champion Sports memorabilia brand, part of a push to open sports-oriented bars and restaurants.

The Bethesda-based lodging company is considering opening 20 sports bars or restaurants worldwide under the Champions name in the coming years.

As part of their agreement, Champion Sports Inc. will become Marriott's exclusive memorabilia supplier and a consultant to the company.

Marriott, the world's largest hotel management chain, has been working to expand its holdings.

Champion Sports, headquartered in Arlington, Va., has been considering a merger or partnership for the past year to maximize shareholder value and meet its long-term financial goals, the company said.

In the fall of 1996, Champion Sports retained Business Expansion Capital Corp. to pursue merger and acquisitions opportunities. Business Expansion Capital is best known for developing the Boston Market chain from a single outlet.
