Boat beat: Toshiba began Leg 2 with Whitbread veteran Paul Stanbridge as its new skipper. He appointed former Olympic bronze medalist Ross McDonald to the helm. Steve Cotton was on tactics. Toshiba's start out of Cape Town wasn't the best as the chute was slow to burst open and for a time the boat trailed the rest of the fleet. But within 10 to 15 minutes Toshiba had recovered to the middle of the pack, and coolly moved to third before falling back to seventh.

Weather: There will be a strong low pressure located around 53S/48E, which will bring increasing winds. Expect a west to southwest flow around 18 to 24 knots near 40S, and there will be wind of 15 to 20 knots likely between 38 and 40S.
