A Gambrills woman was hit in the face Monday by a burglar she surprised in her house, county police said.

Esther Ferrera, 53, was cut on the right side of her face, but refused medical treatment.

Ferrera told police that she was in the basement of her home exercising about 6: 30 p.m. when she heard noises upstairs. She thought it was her cat, but when she went to investigate, she saw a man standing in her dining room, police said.

Ferrera said the man started to leave, then turned and told her, "I want money," according to police.

After he hit Ferrera in the face, she gave him an undisclosed amount, and he left, police said.
