Anne Arundel police arrested a Severna Park man suspected in a Howard County carjacking Saturday morning after a high-speed car chase and foot pursuit early Sunday, police said.

Shawn Alfred Chowanetz, 30, of the 1200 block of Purnell Road was charged with auto theft, fleeing and eluding, driving while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license, said Carol Frye of the Anne Arundel County police.

Sgt. Steven E. Keller of the Howard County police said it is possible more charges will be lodged against him.

On Saturday morning, a 78-year-old man was returning to his car in the Elkridge Corners Shopping Center when a robber approached from behind, took the man's wallet and threatened to "rough up" the victim if he didn't turn over his car keys, Keller said.

After the victim handed over the keys to his 1992 Buick, the robber drove away, Keller said.

About 2: 40 a.m. Sunday, Anne Arundel police Officer Anthony Tortorici spotted a 1992 Buick speeding on Ritchie Highway near McKinsey Road in Severna Park.

The car stopped, a passenger jumped out and ran across a shopping center parking lot. The Buick sped off, and Tortorici chased it north on Ritchie Highway, police said.

The driver of the Buick lost control at eastbound Route 100, stopped the car and fled. Tortorici caught him after a short chase, Frye said.

Chowanetz was being held last night at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center in lieu of $125,000 bail.

Police are looking for the passenger who fled the Buick, Frye said.
