1996 Dry Creek Fume Blanc, Sonoma County ($13).

Dry Creek has long produced one of California's most reliable sauvignon (fume) blancs -- a bone-dry, crisp wine with body and character. In recent years, quality had slipped a little, but this 25th anniversary bottling is everything you would expect of one of California's benchmark wines. It's an aromatic, herbal wine with hints of juniper, pears and smoke. This is a classic wine to serve with rockfish, flounder or shellfish.
