Western sweeps City to win volleyball crown

Host Western (12-0 in the city Class 4A division, 13-2 overall) captured the Baltimore City volleyball championship with a 15-6, 15-8, 15-12 win over the City Knights (13-2) yesterday.

Junior Selena Gaskins was 11-for-15 serving with 11 aces to lead Western, which has won six city championships since 1990.

Western and City shared the city title last year.

Keisha Chapman and Tami Ervan each had seven kills for the Doves, while Jazziel Granada added two aces.

Field hockey

No. 4 Fallston 1, J. M. Bennett 1 2OT (Fallston wins shootout, 4-2): Carrie Wirth, Jen Patro, Leah Keller and Casey Cruise scored in the shootout to lead the defending state Class 2A champs past the Clippers (9-6) in the Class 3A East final in Salisbury. After Keller hit her shot to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead in the shootout, goalie Ashley Staples made a terrific stop against the next Clippers shooter to set up Cruise's game winner. The Harford County champs (14-1) will play Walter Johnson in their fifth straight state tourney appearance at 12: 30 p.m. Monday at Goucher College.

No. 11 Hereford 4, Havre de Grace 1: Sarah Warner and Amber Bell scored twice each to lead the Baltimore County champs over the Warriors (5-6-1) for their second straight Class 1A North region championship. The Bulls (14-2) will play the winner of tomorrow's Elkton-Kent game in the state semifinals at 2: 45 p.m. Monday at Goucher.

Catonsville 5, Broadneck 1: Kara MacLeod scored four goals as the Comets came from behind to beat the Bruins (4-10) for the Class 3A North region title. The Comets (9-5), in a state semifinal for the first time since 1988, meet the winner of yesterday's Calvert-Northern of Calvert game at 12: 30 p.m. Monday at Goucher.

Towson 2, Loch Raven 0: Amy Stringer's two goals helped the Generals avenge last year's Class 2A North region semifinal loss to the Raiders (10-5). Towson (9-5-1) will play No. 14 Mount Hebron in a state semifinal at 12: 30 p.m. Monday at Goucher.

Girls soccer

Hereford 3, Towson 0: Jen Cox had a goal and two assists to lead the undefeated Bulls (11-0-3) into the Class 1A-2A North region final against the Sparrows Point/Edgewood winner.

Brooke Levine and Melissa Muller added goals for Hereford, which recorded its ninth shutout of the season.
