DeFrancesco, Stone tie for MAPGA title

October 31, 1997|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Wayne DeFrancesco, teaching professional at Woodholme Country Club, got up-and-down from a green-side bunker at the 18th green to tie John Stone of Williamsburg (Va.) CC for the championship of the annual Middle Atlantic PGA Tournament of Champions at Old South Country Club yesterday. They were declared co-champions as darkness precluded a playoff.

DeFrancesco converted a six-foot birdie putt at the final hole for a 2-under-par 70 and a 36-hole total of 139 after Stone had finished 69-70139. Ric Nalyd from Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club was in position to make it a three-way tie, but missed a 10-foot birdie putt at the closing hole.

The tie enabled DeFrancesco to earn the MAPGA/STX player-of-the-year award. Rob McNamara of Farmington CC, finished second, and Frank Ferguson of Washington Golf & CC, third.

Melvin Rowe of the CC of Fairfax won the Senior championship in a three-way playoff with Barry Fuhrman, Woodholme CC, and Gary Metzger, BWI GC. They ended at 147.
