Hostetler gets work Frerotte still starter

October 30, 1997|By Bill Free

With Sunday's devastating 20-17 loss to the Ravens still lingering in the players' minds yesterday, Redskins coach Norv Turner spent the day trying to reconstruct his injury-stricken offensive line and watching backup quarterback Jeff Hostetler work with the first team.

No, Turner is not starting Hostetler on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Gus Frerotte is still the No. 1 quarterback but took the day off to be with his wife, Annie, for the birth of the couple's second child.

"Gus will be back tomorrow [today]," Turner said. "It was good for him to be away for a day and good for Jeff to get some reps."

Hostetler was excited about his opportunity to run the team in practice.

"Norv and I have talked about the possibility of me playing some time. If the offense continues to struggle, I have to think I might get a chance to play. We need some wins. But I would never do anything negative to Gus. I wouldn't do anything to Gus that I wouldn't want done to me," Hostetler said.

The good news for the Redskins is that Terry Allen will return at running back after missing two games with a sprained left knee.

Also, Bob Dahl will return at right guard after missing six games with a right knee injury.
