A sense of fashion runs in the family

Candid Closet

October 23, 1997|By Stephanie Shapiro | Stephanie Shapiro,SUN STAFF

Carol Goodman's lifestyle generally demands a casual approach. Sitting on the grass during a child's soccer game doesn't lend itself to 24-hour designer duds. But that doesn't mean Goodman can't throw on a Christine Foley sweater decorated with horses to wear to her daughter's riding lessons, or that she can't don low-heeled shoes by Stuart Weitzman that work with skirts and slacks

On Nov 1., Goodman, 40, will stand backstage in her American Girl T-shirt and allow 9-year-old daughter Kathy to take front stage as she models the clothing from the American Girl Collection for a fashion show fund-raiser sponsored by the Baltimore Junior League. Kathy will wear the outfit of a young Scandinavian pioneer girl. The fashion show takes place three times on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Omni Inner Harbor Hotel. Call 410-296-0748.

What are some of your favorite places to shop?

Ruth Shaw and Mondi, both at Cross Keys. At Ruth Shaw I go for the latest fashion trends. I recently bought a cute Michael Kors outfit, a brown suede jacket with a matching short skirt. I've also bought Kors' fun little pants and skirts and tops. You can mix the patterns or wear something traditional like khaki pants with different colors and fabrics and patterns. Mondi offers more traditional styles, but with new fabrics, new styling. I might be able this season to get a blazer with a zipper up the front, a new twist on an old suit.

What other designers do you enjoy?

I like Versace for that little fun kick. I might wear a cashmere sweater and a pair of his jeans with some striped pattern. I also have a couple of Versace blazers in some bright colors and quite a few Versace blouses. There again you can get a lot of color, but put it with a black blazer and pants.

Where else do you shop?

I also like Irresistibles at Kenilworth. They have a lot of fun, different things, like Christine Foley sweaters. I have one that has horses on it, and I have one with roosters on it, which is really fun to go to a brunch in.

Do you take off on any shopping expeditions?

I go up to New York a couple times a year for day trips to do a little shopping. I don't target a particular store. I do usually hit Saks when I'm there, but I just like to wander around and find those little offbeat things. I like going down to Greenwich Village and stumbling into places.

How did you and Kathy come to own identical American Girl sweaters?

I ordered a sweater for Kathy in a size 16. It wasn't massive for her and it was a classic sweater. I tried it on and thought, "This is nice."

Where do you get your hair done?

I go to About Faces. Once in a while I treat myself to the whole works; not all the time.

What does Kathy wear to school?

She's always preferred to wear pants to school, because she says she can play better.

Where does she shop?

Pied Piper is her favorite. She also likes The Limited and Gap.
