The Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce last night named the principals of O'Conor, Piper & Flynn Realtors as businessmen of the year at the chamber's annual dinner.
James P. O'Conor, James Piper III, Ramsey W.J. Flynn and John G. Evans were inducted into the chamber's Business Hall of Fame at the Sheraton in Towson.
"O'Conor, Piper & Flynn typifies good business in Baltimore County as well as the state of Maryland," said Chamber Chairman David Thaler. "Under the administration of its four principals and through community-minded activities, the company has become a household name in the mid-Atlantic region."
Robert L. McKinney, the chamber's president, told guests at the dinner, "These are four men and a company that have done wonderful things. They have built this community literally. They have put many of us in the houses we now occupy."
O'Conor, Piper & Flynn is the region's largest locally owned and managed independent real estate company. Founded in 1984 with the merger of five Maryland-based real estate companies, O'Conor, Piper & Flynn has since merged with nearly 35 additional independent real estate companies.
The firm now nearly 50 offices and more than 2,000 sales associates specializing in residential, commercial and vacation properties, as well as title insurance and mortgage services.
Donald P. Hutchinson, president of the Greater Baltimore Committee, was Baltimore County Executive when O'Conor and Flynn and Piper & Co. merged.
"This merger allowed the single-most recognizable company in Baltimore County to be created," he said last night.
"What we found out is that these four gentlemen were really visionaries, in that, in the business world of the 1980s and '90s, mergers were going to be pre-eminent business process."
