San Diego (3-3) at Kansas City (4-2)

Time: 8 o'clock, TNT

Line: Chiefs by 6

Vs. spread: Chargers 4-2; Chiefs 3-2.

Last week: Both teams had byes.

Worth watching: Is San Diego RB Gary Brown ready to become a major factor, or was his 181-yard effort in a victory over Oakland before the bye week a fluke?

Outlook: Kansas City hoping for improvements on defense after trading with Green Bay for LB Wayne Simmons. Return of LB Derrick Thomas is doubtful, but it sure would help the Chiefs' cause. The Chargers' upset hopes rest on the passing combination of Stan Humphries to Tony Martin, which has produced 14 catches in three weeks.

Notable: Chiefs QB Elvis Grbac already has matched a career high with eight TD passes.

Injuries:

CHARGERS: Out: K John Carney (knee). Questionable: CB Mark Montreuil (hamstring).

CHIEFS: Questionable: DT Joe Phillips (elbow); LB Derrick Thomas (arm). Probable: WR Lake Dawson (knee); RB Greg Hill

(hamstring).

Staff picks:

John Eisenberg: Chiefs Ken Rosenthal: Chiefs

Gary Lambrecht: Chargers Vito Stellino: Chiefs

Mike Preston: Chiefs
