The Russians are coming

If you've got a taste for pastries and some tea served from a samovar with raspberry jam, the Russian Festival is just your stop. It'll be a weekend filled with authentic foods, song and dance, imported gift items such as lacquered boxes and brooches, ornaments, books and religious items, at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. Come hungry and sample everything from Russian beer and homemade pork sausage to borsch and sourdough Russian rye bread. And catch the Russian dancing of the Mor'yana Dance Company as they perform Saturday.

The Russian Festival takes place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, 1723 E. Fairmount Ave. Admission is a 50-cent donation. Call 410-276-6171.

Czech it out

If you haven't quite had your fill of ethnic fests, check out the Czech and Slovak Festival Sunday. The Baltimore 45 Hall will house performances of music, dancing and gymnastics, a Czech art exhibit, authentic gifts and food. Take a swig of some Czech beer, nosh on roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut, or enjoy the kolacky, strudel and other pastries. Music will be provided by Joy, dancing by the Slovak Dancers and gymnastics by Sokol Baltimore.

The Czech and Slovak Festival takes place Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Baltimore 45 Hall, 2501 Putty Hill Ave., Parkville. $5 admission. Call 410-893-2727.

Rollin', rollin', rollin'

Stand back. Clear a path. It's coming this way. The World's Largest Popcorn Ball is rolling into town Saturday. The Boy Scouts of America are attempting to create the largest ball of its kind and enter it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

The ball began its journey Labor Day weekend in Los Angeles and is rolling through 51 cities. Current stop: Baltimore. Golden Ring Mall will offer its parking lot to the ball and its fans as Scouts and the general public will be able to add popped popcorn to the ball. The target dimensions of the ball will be a weight of more than 6,000 pounds and a diameter of 10 feet. So stop your munching and add a bunch to the ball.

The World's Largest Popcorn Ball pops over to the Golden Ring Mall lot, 6400 Rossville Blvd., Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Free participation. Call 410-338-1700, Ext. 105.
