Pa. man, 23, pleads guilty to rape of teen

October 15, 1997

A Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty yesterday to raping a 13-year-old girl at his former home in Westminster in April and May 1996.

Under a plea agreement, Gary L. Haines, 23, of Glen Rock in York County will be sentenced in January to serve no more than 12 months in the Carroll County Detention Center and will be eligible for work release.

Haines also was placed on five years' probation and was ordered not to have any contact with the girl, who prosecutors said told them that she consented to sex with Haines after smoking marijuana and watching television at his apartment.

The girl said she sneaked out of her home to meet with Haines on one occasion and was picked up before entering a "lock-in" slumber party for young teens on another occasion.
