Boat beat: EF Language, captained by Paul Cayard, stormed into the lead on Day 21 and is now nearly 13 miles ahead of the leader of the past 14 days, Innovation Kvaerner (Knut Frostad), which is now in third place. Merit Cup (Grant Dalton) continues in second place, 10 miles behind the leader. Just before the 6 p.m. GMT position report, Cayard wrote that EF Language had broken a headsail and masthead instruments. The fluky conditions were later confirmed by Grant Dalton, who reported yesterday morning from Merit Cup that, for the first time in the race, Merit Cup was totally becalmed. A report from Frostad summed up the depression on board at surrendering the lead: "Bad day for us. Completely parked in rain squall after rain squall. No wind, what more can I say?"

Weather: Light winds, mainly east-southeast. Note: Information compiled from the Whitbread Round the World Race Web at www.whitbread.org
