Key a reliever? Johnson hopes not

October 12, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

CLEVELAND -- Though struggling left-hander Jimmy Key won't make another start in this series, Orioles manager Davey Johnson said he would use him in relief only if a game went into extra innings.

"I'm trying to stay off him," Johnson said. "It's possible he could be one of the early starters in the World Series. He threw about 80 pitches [Thursday] and I wouldn't want to bring him back if he does have a tired arm. That wouldn't freshen him up."

When yesterday's game went into extra innings, Key went to the bullpen but did not warm up.
