Temple Beth Shalom announces its services for Yom Kippur

TEMPLE BETH SHALOM in Arnold observes Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement, tomorrow evening with services at 6: 30 and 9: 30. Services Saturday are at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew by the Bay Roman Catholic Church in Annapolis; and at the temple at 2 p.m. (children's service), 3: 30 p.m., 5: 30 p.m. (Yizkor service) and 6: 15 p.m. (Neilah service).

The festival of Sukkot, Feast of Tabernacles, goes back to a time when Jews worshiped at the temple at Jerusalem. The Hebrew word means "booth," a temporary shelter Jews used when wandering in the desert. It also refers to harvest time, when workers rested in shelters.

Sukkot services are scheduled at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. Oct. 16.

The last day of Sukkot is a holiday, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Services to celebrate the Torah scrolls are at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 and 11 a.m. Oct. 23.

Middle school fair

A middle school fair will be held this evening at Chesapeake Academy in Arnold for parents and fourth- and fifth-graders.

Representatives from Key, Severn, Indian Creek, Calverton, Queen Anne and St. Anne's schools will be on hand to answer questions.

The fair will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The academy is at 1185 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.

Luncheon reservations

Tomorrow is the deadline for reservations for the Severna Park Newcomers general luncheon meeting Wednesday.

The meeting begins with an 11: 30 a.m. social hour in the cafe at Annapolis Nordstrom.

Lunch is $12.50. It will be

followed by a series of fashion seminars by Nordstrom experts.

Women's health

Women taking an active role in their health care can schedule ......TC bone-density test between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 16 at the YWCA on Ritchie Highway in Arnold.

A bone-density screening -- painless, noninvasive and safe -- detects early stages of bone loss, which can signify osteoporosis, a disease that leads to crippling and fractures. This disease affects 20 million U.S. women a year, especially the fair-skinned and small-boned.

Osteoporosis can be prevented or minimized by diet and exercise.

Sewing club meeting

The Snip Snap Sewing Club meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Christ Lutheran Church on Jumpers Hole Road in Millersville. Kathy Babbitt will demonstrate machine applique techniques. New members are welcome.

Library homework center

The library, always a good source of information for schoolwork, has taken it one step further.

Now, students can take homework assignment sheets from teachers to a branch library, where a homework center provides access to books, articles and databases.

Students should arrive as early as possible.
