PBS science show opens season in a rain forest At a glance

"Scientific American Frontiers" (8 p.m.-9 p.m., MPT, Channels 22 and 67) returns for its eighth season on PBS, with science buff Alan Alda as host.

The opener, filmed in Panama, examines research aimed at restoring the rain forest and tracks bats in flight. Also: Alda clears his palate for a segment called "Rat Soup."
