A. L. Rowse,93, an acerbic historian whose achievements as a Shakespeare scholar and authority on Tudor England were valued by none so highly as himself, died Friday in London.

The author of about 90 volumes of history, poetry and biography, he was made a Companion of Honor last year -- a royal honor bestowed for "conspicuous national service."

His eccentricity -- a self-regard so extreme that it seemed almost contrived -- in later years overshadowed his undoubted accomplishments. A proud Cornishman of the working class, he was a historian whose work was widely popular because of its readability.
