Boat beat: Silk Cut may have had a "close encounter." In an e-mail from the boat, the crew recounted the following strange tale:

"An hour or so ago we had a very large and active thundercloud come directly over us which produced an amazing light-and-sound show with lightning strikes hitting the water within a couple of hundred meters of us. Very strangely, our on-board video system, which was in sleep mode, turned itself on and some indicator lights which have never worked started flashing."

Hours after this strange event, Silk Cut had closed within eight nautical miles of Chessie Racing.

Weather: Tradewinds continue brisk north of 12N with speeds generally 14-22 knots, coming from northeast to an east-northeast direction. Note: Information compiled from the Whitbread Round the World Race Web site at www.whitbread.org
