A Howard County woman was assaulted while jogging in Patapsco Valley State Park near Relay on Thursday evening, according to a spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources.

The unidentified woman in her 40s told police that she was attacked from behind while jogging at 6: 10 p.m. in the Avalon Area of the park, along River Road between the swinging bridge and Gun Road near the Baltimore County line, said DNR spokesman John Surrick.

The man pulled a knife while the two struggled, Surrick said.

The woman managed to break free and ran west along River Road. The assailant ran east, a police report said.

Surrick said the woman reported the incident to two people riding bicycles in the area.

While in the park's parking area, the cyclists saw someone leaving who matched the woman's description of her attacker and took down the license tag number.

Baltimore police later arrested 23-year-old Michael W. Bryant of Baltimore.

He is being held at the Howard County Detention Center and has been charged with assault and carrying a knife.
