28 city officers lauded for roles in investigation of pirated tapes

Maj. Steven McMahon, commander of the Central District,was the top-ranking officer among 28 city police officers to receive symbolic "Gold Record" awards and certificates yesterday from the Recording Industry Association of America.

The officers earned the distinction by conducting an investigation with the recording industry of sellers and makers of pirated audio tapes.

The probe led to 12 convictionsand the seizure of $140,000 in illegal property, including 10,000 pirated tapes, compact discs, recorders and dubbing machines.
