Game 2 matchup

October 02, 1997|By Peter Schmuck

O's Scott Erickson (16-7, 3.69) vs. Mariners' Jamie Moyer (17-5, 3.86)

What Erickson throws: Erickson is a classic sinker/slider pitcher who can change up to break the rhythm of the hitters. He throws his fastball hard and, ideally, down in the strike zone to both right- and left-handed hitters.

Erickson of late: He had has most complete season since 1991, but had a surprisingly soft September. He came into '97 with a 21-8 career record in the final month of the season, but won just once in his final seven starts. He did, however, pitch well in his final two appearances, giving up three earned runs in 13 innings.

Something to look for: It's all about location. If Erickson keeps the ball low in the strike zone, he should be very effective. If not, the Mariners will tee off on him.

What Moyer throws: The former Orioles left-hander is a classic finesse pitcher. He throws his fastball at various speeds and keeps batters off-balance with a changeup and a collection of breaking stuff.

Moyer of late: He has pitched very well down the stretch, winning six of his final seven decisions to complete a career year, but was cuffed around by the Oakland Athletics in his final regular-season start.

Something to look for: If Moyer is not locating the ball well, it will be apparent early. He uses his fastball more than most junkball pitchers, but he doesn't have nearly enough velocity to hide behind his stuff.
