Rich leather can be chic, conservative

October 02, 1997|By ELSA KLENSCH | ELSA KLENSCH,Los Angeles Times Syndicate

I grew up as the youngest daughter in a large conservative family in Seoul. When I went to university in New York I immediately changed my style, although I've been careful to dress modestly when I went home on vacations.

Now that I've graduated, have a job and intend to spend my life in Manhattan, I'm getting ready to go home for Christmas where my family is planning a party to celebrate my success.

I don't want to upset them, but I think it's time they saw the real me. What do you suggest?

Think leather. It's urbane, sensual and comes in many sophisticated colors.

Few designers believe in it more than Donna Karan. One of the hits of her D collection was her body-skimming leather dresses. For a New York look she pairs them with leggings. Here's Donna's advice:

"Be yourself and you'll be comfortable. Find a dress that is modern and versatile. Then explore different ways of wearing it."
