McDonogh, finding itself in the unusual position of being behind Spalding in the rankings and in the standings, came out strong and outworked the No. 2 Cavaliers for a 3-1 victory in an MIAA A Conference game in Severn.
The No. 6 Eagles (9-1) improved to 5-1 in conference play, while handing the Cavaliers (8-2-1, 5-1-1) their first league loss.
"We wanted to come out and match their intensity level and work rate today and we did that," said McDonogh coach Steve Nichols.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when freshman forward Kaiser Chowdhry scored off a rebound from six yards out.
Less than two minutes later, senior midfielder Bobby Cherneski converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0.
Jon Cole gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead 12 minutes into the second half with his ninth goal of the season, to go along with eight assists.
