A Calvert County man was killed when his car drifted off Bay Front Road West in Tracys Landing on Monday and struck a tree, tearing the vehicle in half, county police said.

Nicholas Stradley Moore, 20, of North Beach was pronounced dead about 1 a.m. yesterday at Anne Arundel Medical Center, authorities said.

Police said Moore's 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit was traveling toward McKendree shortly after 10 p.m. when the car drifted onto the right shoulder, hit a tree and broke apart. It was unclear how fast the car was going, police said.

The front half of the car went into a field; the rear half came to rest on the shoulder, police said.

Police are investigating the accident.

County police arrested a Glen Burnie man yesterday in the holdup of an Arnold gas station and say they believe he might be responsible for another gas station robbery Saturday.

Keith S. Yates, 21, of the 700 block of Nabbs Creek Road was charged with robbery and possession of marijuana after the holdup yesterday at the Arnold Sunoco station in the 1500 block of Ritchie Highway.

In the robberies yesterday and Saturday, the robber had a sweat shirt wrapped around his hand, implied that he had a weapon and fled in a white Mercury Cougar.

Willa Neff, a clerk at the Sunoco station, told police that the robber walked into the station's convenience store shortly after midnight with a sweat shirt wrapped around his hand, implied he had a weapon and demanded money, police said. Neff gave the robber money, and he fled in a white Mercury Cougar, police said.

Police broadcast a description of the car and the robber, and an officer stopped a Mercury Cougar matching the description on Leelyn at McKinsey roads in Severna Park.

Police arrested the driver, searched the car and found a sweat shirt and cash under the driver's seat, authorities said. Police also seized a small amount of what appeared to be marijuana and a pipe from the car, they said.

Detectives are still investigating the robbery Saturday at McKinsey Shell station in the 600 block of Ritchie Highway, Severna Park.
