Delaware tops Towson in 2nd OT, 2-1 Princeton hands Loyola third straight loss, 1-0

Brad Phillips' 15-yard header off a direct kick by Brian Gunter (C.M. Wright) in the first minute of the second overtime lifted Delaware to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over host Towson yesterday.

The Blue Hens (2-4-1) had not beaten Towson (6-3) since 1986 and had not scored twice in a game this season.

Towson broke a scoreless tie with 24: 52 left in the game when Richie Moller, the third-leading scorer in Division I, scored his 11th goal on a penalty kick.

The Blue Hens tied the game with 20 minutes remaining when Dennis O'Connell scored off a pass from Brian Bates.

Towson goaltender Ethan Jennings (Bel Air) made 10 saves.

Princeton 1, Loyola 0: Brien Wassner scored with 2: 31 left in regulation to lift the Tigers in the first round of the Black & Decker Lotto Classic at the College of Notre Dame. Princeton improved to 3-1, and the Greyhounds dropped to 2-3-2 with their third straight loss.

Navy 2, Lafayette 0: Mike Lowe and Stephen Earl each scored to give the Midshipmen (3-6) their first Patriot League win. Lowe's tally at the 78-minute mark helped end a three-game losing streak.

Johns Hopkins 3, Ursinus 0: Eric West scored 15 seconds into the game and again at 60: 55 to carry the Blue Jays (6-0), who entered the week ranked third in Division III.

Mount St. Mary's 1, Fairleigh Dickinson 1, OT: Simon Hodkin scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute to give the Mount (5-4-1) a Northeast Conference tie on the road.

Frostburg State 2, Salisbury State 1, OT: Pete Merrill's tally at 4: 29 of overtime lifted the Bobcats (7-1) over the visiting Sea Gulls (2-5).

Western Maryland 3, Swarthmore 1: Darren Wolf scored the first two goals of his collegiate career as the Green Terror (2-3-1) won a Centennial Conference home game.

Washington College 1, Franklin & Marshall 0: Dan Gerbasi (Broadneck) scored at 42: 35 to give the Shoremen (2-6) their second consecutive win.


Loyola 7, Manhattan 0: Jessica Sheehan had a hat trick and two assists, and Jaime DeSoto added two goals to boost the Greyhounds (5-3-1) to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win.

Mount St. Mary's 1, Robert Morris 1, 2OT: Jessica Loehr scored her first goal of the season in the 57th minute to give the visiting Mountaineers a draw.

It marked the first time Robert Morris had ever earned a tie with the Mountaineers. The Colonials (2-5-1) scored their first goal in seven games with the Mountaineers when Jen Miller bent in a right-footed corner kick in the 32nd minute.

Johns Hopkins 1, Muhlenberg 0: Courtney Walker's goal with 7: 19 left in the first overtime lifted the Blue Jays (7-0), who have not allowed a goal this season.

Western Maryland 5, Swarthmore 1: Beth Blasi (Fallston), Erin Murphey (Francis Scott Key) and Marci Short each had a goal and an assist to lead the Green Terror (4-2) in a Centennial Conference home game.

Mary Washington 4, Salisbury State 0: Kristen Mercer scored twice to lead the visiting Eagles (7-1-1) past the Sea Gulls (5-3).
